1. PURPOSE OF REPORT AND POLICY CONTEXT
1.1 This report informs the Council of the activities of the Mayor, Cllr Lizzie Deane during the civic year 2022-23.
2. RECOMMENDATIONS:
2.1 That the report be noted.
3. CONTEXT/ BACKGROUND INFORMATION
3.1 The Mayor is the first citizen of Brighton and Hove and carries out a range of civic and ceremonial duties, representing the council across the city and around the region. The Mayor of Brighton and Hove is not directly elected, holds no direct power and is politically neutral during their term in office. The role is purely civic and ceremonial.
3.2 The Mayor selected Father Dominic Keech from St Nicholas Church to act as her Chaplain.
3.3 The Mayor supported the following charities during her Mayoral year: All Sorts, Brighton Fringe, Campaign for the Preservation of Rural England, Fareshare, Martlets, New Note Orchestra, Off the Fence, Sussex Heart Charity and Team Domenica.
3.4 Engagements were back to pre-Covid numbers during the Mayoral Year and the Mayor attended 418 engagements and events during her term in office (for a breakdown please see appendix 1) with support from the Deputy Mayor and former Mayor Cllr Alan Robins.
3.5 The Platinum Jubilee of HM the Queen was celebrated with a picnic in the Royal Pavilion gardens, in partnership with Brighton Fringe on the 4th of June 2022.
3.6 With the announcement of HM the Queen having passed away on the 8 September, Operation London Bridge was triggered, with the local proclamation taking place on the 11 September from the Royal Pavilion balcony. The proclamation was filmed and available on the Council website. A Civic church service was held on the eve of the funeral on the 18 September in All Saints church.
3.7 An exhibition of portraits of Charles III was held to coincide with the King’s Coronation on the 6 May 2023. The portraits were made by local school children with 16 schools taking part resulting in an exhibition of 1816 portraits being on display in Hove Museum of Creativity (5 May to the 4 June 2023).
3.8 The Mayor undertakes many different duties including Chairing meetings of Full Council, representing the council at public, civic and ceremonial events both in and outside the city, acting as an ambassador for the city and working with a wide range of local organisations.
3.9 Further highlights of the Mayoral year included:
· Platinum Jubilee Street Parties
· University Graduations
· Citizenship Ceremonies
· Remembrance Services across the City
· Civic Advent Service
· Children’s Parade triggering the start of Brighton Festival
· Chattri Memorial Service to honour the Indian soldiers that fought during WWI
· Pride Festival
3.10 The Mayor hosted events in the Parlour throughout the year. Scout awards, school visits, meetings and charity events took place in the Council Chamber.
3.11 Acts of Remembrance across the city took place with big crowds gathering again this year for both Brighton and for Hove. The last service of the day attended by the Mayor was held in the Brighton Reform Synagogue and organised by the Association of Jewish ex Service Men and Women (AJEX).
3.12 The Mayor wishes to thank her Chaplain Father Dominic Keech from St Nicholas Church for his support throughout an exceptional year.
3.13 The Mayor would like to thank her Consort Henry Bruce for his support throughout the year.
3.14 The Mayor is grateful for the support of officers, the civic office team and those involved in helping to manage the council meetings.
3.15 The Mayor would like to thank the Deputy Mayor Cllr Jackie O’Quinn for her support in attending engagements.
4. ANALYSIS & CONSIDERATION OF ANY ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS
4.1 This is an annual report from the Mayor for information and there are no alternative options for consideration.

The Platinum Jubilee, Proclamation, Coronation and Remembrance Services have been classified under Traditional/Heritage which is why that particular classification is more populated than the other engagement types this year.
